Pack 418 Operations
Below you will find all the “business stuff” of our Pack. Please remember it takes many, many volunteers for a Cub Scout Pack to run smoothly and all your leaders ARE volunteers. We’d love to have every parent involved in our Pack’s leadership. Contact Sonya at sonya.rhodes@pack418.org if you want to donate “just one hour a week” to help these boys grow into honorable Scouts.
*Budgets - The Annual Budget Plan is the plan of record, or the baseline, for the plan year’s anticipated expenses. The Budget Forecast is the revised budget driven by the dynamics of the operational needs for the Pack throughout the year.

Scouting Information
The “Cubbing Program” was introduced by the Boy Scouts of America in 1930, but its roots go all the way back to the first days of Scouting. With the early success of the Boy Scouts for boys 12 and over, there was popular demand for a “younger boy program” for the siblings of Scouts. Because of concerns that a younger boy program might have a negative effect on the fledgling Boy Scouts program, the BSA was very careful in their dealings with this younger boy problem. (See Scouting Magazine article on “Cubbing” June 1930).
In 1916, Sir Robert Baden-Powell introduced the “Wolf Cub” program for younger boys. This program soon found its way to numerous communities in the Americas. There were also other younger boy organizations such as the “Little Lodge” of the “Woodcraft Indians,” the “Boy Pioneers,” and the “Boy Rangers.” Some BSA Boy Scout Troops were also sponsoring unofficial “Junior Troops” and “Cadet Corps.” Finally, after 20 years of Boy Scouting in America,
“Cubbing” was introduced! What has followed has been nothing short of phenomenal! Boasting over 50,000,000 members since its inception, no program in history has had the far ranging impact on American youth than Cubbing and Cub Scouting have!

Dens
Boys like to belong to a group. The den is the place where boys of the same age learn new skills and develop interests in new things. They have fun in weekly den meetings, during indoor and outdoor activities, and on field trips. As part of a small group of six to eight boys, they are able to learn sportsmanship and good citizenship. They learn how to get along with others. They learn how to do their best, not just for themselves but also for the den.
Tiger Cubs. The Tiger Cub program is for boys in first grade (or age 7) and their adult partners.
Wolf. The Wolf program is for boys who have completed first grade (or are age 8).
Bear. The Bear program is for boys who have completed second grade (or are age 9).
Webelos I. This program is for boys who have completed third grade (or are age 10).
Webelos II. This program is for boys who have completed fourth grade (or are age 11).

About Pack 418
Pack 418 provides an exciting program for boys in grades 1 through 5 (or ages 6 through 11). Our Pack consists of over 50 boys who attend Groves Elementary or Draper Intermediate schools or are home schooled.
The purposes of Cub Scouting are physical fitness, character development, and citizenship. If you ask a boy, however, he will seldom offer these reasons for being a Cub Scout. Boys have one primary reason for joining Cub Scouts, and that is to have FUN! Our Pack provides boys (and their families) a lot of fun!
Our Pack meets one evening a month in the cafeteria at Groves Elementary School. Interested in joining us? Contact us at feedback@pack418.org to get more information about this fun and rewarding program!
Pack Structure and Leadership
It takes many, many volunteers for a Cub Scout Pack to run smoothly. See Pack Organization Chart for the structure of a typical pack and Pack Committee to see who in our pack fills those roles. Besides the leaders who work directly with the boys in the dens, we have many behind-the-scene positions to fill. Contact us at feedback@pack418.org if you want to donate “just one hour a week” to help these boys grow into honorable Scouts.
We wish everyone a Happy Holiday season from Pack 418!

During our Pack Holiday Celebration on December 19, our scouts created a giant holiday card (pictured above) for the Garnet Hill Assisted Living Center in Wylie. The following day, the Cubmaster presented the giant holiday card to the residents of Garnet Hill who proudly hung the card for everyone to enjoy. It quickly drew a crowd and sure brightened everyone’s holiday.
Thank you to our scouts for making this card. Even some of the simplest gestures from our scouts have a temendous impact on our community.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Out with the old, and in with the new! As we bid farewell to 2008 and reflect back on all of our accomplishments and the new friendships we created this past year, we look forward with great anticipation and enthusiasm to what lies ahead in the new year. And, what better way is there to kick-off a new year than have a Pinewood Derby!
In January, our Pack will hold its annual Pinewood Derby. We expect it will be just as exciting as years before. The competition is expected to be fierce and the cars faster than ever. We will expand our Pinewood Derby event this year to also include a Scout’s Car Show and to add a second race event, the “Outlaw”! The “Outlaw” race will give our scouting families an opportunity to personally experience the excitement of Pinewood Derby racing. We encourage every family member to enter.
Be sure to read more about our Pinewood Derby below. We hope to see you, your scout, and the rest of your family at the races!
Until next month,
- Ronnie Rhodes, Cubmaster Pack 418
